Lagos Mechanic’s Car Crushes Mother, Two Children In Ajamgbadi Area

A Woman and her two children have been confirmed dead after a car rammed into them in the Ajamgbadi area of Lagos State.

The accident occurred on Saturday around 8:30 pm at 77 Bus Stop Shibiri Imude Road, Ajamgbadi.

The 29-year-old driver of the ash-coloured Toyota Camry with registration number BDG-55IHG, who is also a mechanic, one Oluwatimilehin Olajide, was said to have fled the scene of the accident after a mob attempted to lynch him, and ran to a nearby police post.

An eyewitness told PUNCH Metro that the car was on top speed when it crushed the woman and her two children.

He said, “The driver was at a high speed when the car rammed into the woman and her two children. The trio died instantly.

“The driver of the car took off with his car. I guess he was scared of the boys there who wanted to lynch him. They however chased after him,” he added.

When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

He said the driver of the car, a mechanic, crushed the mother and children and ran off to the Shibiri Police Post as the mob attempted to attack him. He said the mob chased him to the station with the same intent but he was saved by a team of detectives sent by the DPO from Ilemba Hausa Division.

He said, “Officers of the Ilemba Hausa Police Division received a distress call from the Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the Shibiri Police Post on Saturday that one Oluwatimilehin Olajide, 29, drove an ash-coloured Toyota Camry with registration number BDG-55IHG, speedily into the police post.

“He alighted and ran into the post; he revealed that he had an accident and hit a woman and her two children who lost their lives on the spot.

“However, while he narrated the incident to the ASP, a crowd emerged and overwhelmed them.

“The mob destroyed the car, threatened to set the police post and the car ablaze if the suspect was not released to them.”

Hundeyin said, “The Divisional Police Officer of the Ilemba Hausa Division on receiving this call led operatives to the police post and condoned off the area, rescued the suspect and took the car to the station.

“The DPO of Ilemba Hausa Division led a team of detectives to the police post, condoned off the area and rescued the suspect.

“The car was also carried to the station. The police also visited the scene of the accident in the company of traffic officers and the corpses were evacuated.”

Hundeyin added that the deceased’s relatives were making arrangements to carry the corpses for burial.

“Some officers have been positioned at the post to douse the tension there. Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased have started arrangements to carry the corpses for burial in line with Islamic rites.”

Hundeyin, however, advised drivers to stop speeding and dangerous driving, especially in this Yuletide.
