In the early morning of February 22, 1898, a white mob descended on the home of Frazier and Lavinia Baker in Lake City, South Carolina. After the mob set the home — which was also the town post office — on fire and waking the family, it began to shoot at the Bakers and their six young children who were attempting to flee. Bullets hit Frazier, Lavinia, and four of their children. Frazier and his baby daughter, Julia, died. Lavinia and her five surviving children escaped. The lynching of Postmaster Frazier Baker was preceded by racist rumors, accusations, and less-organized violent attacks by the white townspeople of Lake City. The harassment began after Baker was appointed by President William McKinley to serve as the city’s first Black postmaster in 1897. A Woman and her two children have been confirmed dead after a car rammed into them in the Ajamgbadi area of Lagos State. The accident occurred on Saturday around 8:30 pm at 77 Bus Stop Shibiri Imude Road, Ajamgbadi. The 29-year-old driver of the ash-coloured Toyota Camry with registration number BDG-55IHG, who is also a mechanic, one Oluwatimilehin Olajide, was said to have fled the scene of the accident after a mob attempted to lynch him, and ran to a nearby police post. An eyewitness told PUNCH Metro that the car was on top speed when it crushed the woman and her two children. He said, “The driver was at a high speed when the car rammed into the woman and her two children. The trio died instantly. “The driver of the car took off with his car. I guess he was scared of the boys there who wanted to lynch him. They however chased after him,” he added. In February 2018, Jason Vukovich, a 43-year-old man, received a prison sentence of 23 years for a series of assault and robbery offenses. Interestingly, some individuals consider Vukovich a vigilante hero, as all of his victims were identified as pedophiles. Vukovich had previously referred to himself as an "avenging angel seeking justice," but he has since expressed remorse for his actions. After serving six years of his sentence, he will be eligible to apply for parole. During his trial, it was disclosed that Vukovich had been a victim of abuse himself, having been sexually and physically mistreated by his stepfather during his childhood. He has since admitted that his vengeful actions were not justified, and he now assumes "full responsibility for his actions."
